Edgar William Brandt was born in Paris on December 24 1880. His father, Charles Eugène Brandt, was a displaced person from Alsace, the French province annexed by Prussia in 1871. After a childhood in the 'Sologne' (a woody region of central France) and studies at Vierzon's Technical College, he returned to the capital to start a brilliant career.
